Book Review: Love Slave for Two By Tymber Dalton

Normally, when I want a strong emotional read with lots of angst and longing, I count on Tymber Dalton. From that perspective, Love Slave for Two was disappointing. There was tension, but it was short lived when it happened.

Actually, this was a happy, feel good story. I like those kinds of stories, it just wasn’t what I was expecting.

This book was a m/m/f. But it was written more like a m/f/m story. Yes, the men did have sex with each other in addition to the female character, but it wasn’t really shown. It was more of a fade to black. Since I know Tymber Dalton can write scorching m/m sex, this was disappointing. I like scorching m/m sex.

If I had to guess, I would say this was one of Dalton’s earlier works and she has grown as a writer. I assumed she was targeting an audience that was not as comfortable with m/m.

It was a lovely portrayal of how a three-way relationship could be loving and healthy. All three characters were genuinely likeable. But, it really wasn’t my cup of tea.

God and Science

I feel a little nervous about this post. I believe everyone needs to make their own decisions about issues of faith. I am not advocating people join any one religion.

I am so tired of people saying that scientists can’t believe in God and that faith is against science. Most geek’s I see portrayed in popular media are atheists. It’s true that in real life some are.

But for many of us, there is no inherent contradiction between science and faith. Just because I believe God created the rules of the universe, doesn’t mean there isn’t value in studying them and that they don’t follow certain laws. In fact, I believe the opposite. Studying the rules God set forth, is actually a holy pursuit in my eyes.

I don’t mean you need to sacrifice small animals before performing experiments or solving equations.

I mean I believe that when we study the universe around us; from the tiniest particles to the farthest reaches of space, from the big bang to the eventual victory of entropy, when we study these things and everything in between we are catching a glimpse of God. He created all of this, he made these rules. Understanding them, allows us to see a tiny piece of his plan, his thought processes. That is an absolutely amazing accomplishment and very worthy of our time.

The flip side that because there are rules in the universe means God can’t exist or because we can’t prove or disprove God exists he doesn’t is a logical fallacy. At best we can say we don’t know if he does or does not exist. Anyone else who says he does not exist, has put just as much faith into that belief as someone who says he does.

That may be their faith, but it is faith.

Will we ever know? I can’t say. Will we ever understand everything? It seems unlikely, but who knows? Trying to learn and understand is worth doing.

Now please do not misunderstand. None of the above has anything to do with religion. Religion, IMHO is of man. It is man’s attempt to commune with God. It attempts to help people with faith. True religions have people with faith in them. But religion isn’t faith. Faith has to do with what you believe to be true. Religion is how people have chosen to organize themselves that have similar faith.

Because religion is really created by man, it is subject to the universal rule. People make mistakes. No religion can be perfect. Those that look most carefully to God come the closet, but still it’s hard for things not to get lost in translation.

Book Review: How to Write Descriptions of Eyes and Faces by Val Kovalin

One of the areas where I am struggling to improve my own writing is in an area that is called Show Don’t Tell. Show Don’t Tell means to use words that paint a picture for the reader instead of just lecturing to them. It’s can make the difference between a compelling story and one that is dry as the desert.

How to Write Descriptions of Eyes and Faces by Val Kovalin has become one of my essential references. I refer to it constantly as I am writing for all kinds of things. It has a list of terms for describing eye color. It has a list of emotions and then describes what physically happens to a person’s face when they are feeling those emotions.

It is a great starting point when I am describing a new character or a situation a character finds himself in. This is the first Show Don’t Tell book I have read so I seem to spend a lot of time describing character’s eyes. It makes me laugh a bit since I seem to have an eye obsession. Still, I like the results. I have also read Ms. Kovalin’s book How to Write Descriptions of Hair and Skin to further improve my writing. I’ll post a review for that one in another post, but I will say it is just as useful.

While creating the links for this post I saw that Ms Kovalin has a new book in this series, How to Write Sexy Descriptions and Sex Scenes. This looks useful! I already downloaded a sample to my Kindle app on my iPhone.

My only quibble with the book is that I keep coming up with emotions and situations she has not covered. Horrors! I have to do some work.

Why I love Amazon on Demand

I just found this post that I wrote last October and never posted. Hopefully it’s better late then never.

In spite of the fact that it is October, we had an old fashioned Nor’Easter yesterday. The snow was not significant. We have certainly had worse storms. But it was bad enough to knock out power. We lost power at our house. We spent the day at the mall, but it became clear that we probably wouldn’t get power back today. In addition to needing power to have heat (and it gets cold at night) I need power to sleep. I sleep with a CPAP because I have sleep apnea. Since we lost power at 1:30am last night and my battery backup ran out at 2:30am I am writing this first draft in a very sleepy state.

So we are sleeping at a hotel tonight so that we are warm and I can sleep.

But you are probably wondering what that has to do with Amazon on Demand. Well…have you ever noticed that while hotels have channels like TNT and USA on their systems they rarely have Disney, Nick Jr, or some other channel that has kids shows on 24/7.

So we got to the hotel which is near our house and realized we forgot stuff, of course. So my husband goes home to get the stuff and I am in charge of the munchkins who have been driving me crazy all day. Especially my sensitive child who is freaked out by any change in routine. And remember I am sleep deprived.

So I did the only thing I could think of. I took one of our lap tops and logged on to the free high speed internet here at the hotel. I connected to Amazon and voila! Instant TV. I happened to choose a program we had bought but we are also prime members so I could have chosen one of the many programs that are included in that as well. So the kids are watching Blue’s Clues and I am using our other laptop to write this lovely note to all of you.
